Washington condemns the missile attack near US consulate in Erbil, Iraq

The United States of America has denounced the missile attack that struck its consulate in Iraq’s northern city of Irbil at dawn today.

The Foreign Ministry quoted the Turkish ”Anadolu” agency as saying in a statement: The attack caused no human or material losses in the consulate, describing  the attack as ”a coward act”.    

The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, tweeted: “The aggression which targeted the dear city of Irbil and spread fear amongst its inhabitants is an attack on the security of our people.” He added that they would start investigations on the attack, and would deter any attempts of threat that affect the security and safety of Iraqi people.

In turn, the governor of Erbil, Hamid Hasnaf, described the missile attack that targeted the US consulate as a “terrorist act”, and said that the security forces in the city were alarmed right after the attack..

On Sunday morning, A missile attack stuck the area around the US Consulate in Erbil, followed by the sound of five explosions near Erbil International Airport.

Iraqi government sources said that the attack caused a fire in the area, and no casualties were reported.

So far, no party has claimed responsibility for the attack that targeted the US Consulate in Irbil, amid accusations against pro-Iranian militias in Iraq.

The top U.S. commander for the Middle East has repeatedly warned about the increasing threats of attacks from Iran and Iranian-back militias on troops and allies in Iraq and Syria.
