An American delegation arrives in northeastern Syria

An American delegation concerned with Syria has arrived in northeastern Syria for meetings with SDF officials, tribal leaders from Raqqa, their military counterparts, and humanitarian actors.

According to a statement by the American embassy in Damascus, the delegation includes the Acting Assistant Secretary of State, Joy Hood, accompanied by the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and the Special Representative for Syria, Amy Catrona, the Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, David Brownstein, and the Director of the National Security Council for Iraq and Syria in the White House,

The Acting Assistant Secretary of State affirmed the United States’ commitment to cooperation and coordination in the coalition against ISIS, the continuation of stability in northeastern Syria, and the delivery of stabilization assistance to the liberated areas to ensure the permanent defeat of the organization.

On May 6, US President Joe Biden extended the national emergency for Syria for an additional year, in his first stance towards Syria since he took office last January.

On February 8, the US Department of Defense announced that the tasks entrusted to its forces in Syria are limited to fighting ISIS, and that it is no longer responsible for protecting oil wells.
