Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW): The Assad Regime did not respond to the Technical Secretariat in Syria

The Deputy to the High Representative of the United Nations Office of Disarmament Affairs, Adedeji Ebo, said that Assad regime did not respond to Technical Secretariat concerned with the issue of disarmament and detection the chemical weapons.

This statement came during a speech he delivered at the Security Council on Syria’s Chemical Weapons Program, confirming that despite Assad regime’s approval to address the issues related to chemical weapons through previous emails, however, it did not respond to emails related to Technical Secretariat’s work.

Ibo added that the Technical Secretariat suggested sending small number teams to implement limited tasks inside Syria due to the current situation.

Ibo expressed his frustration that Assad regime did not cooperate and send the required files concerning the detection of chemical substance inside facilities of Barzah, Douma and others which Assad regime targeted them with toxic chemicals.

Ibo emphasized the need to continue the work of OPCW Fact-Finding Mission in Syria. He also urged Assad regime to respond to the requests of the Technical Secretariat of the Organization as soon as possible.

Ibo pointed out to the importance of identifying those responsible for such attacks and holding them accountable, for the sake of the victims and to deter any chemical war in the future.
