26 killed and 60 injured in an explosion targeting Aden airport

Today, Wednesday, 26 people were killed and more than 60 others were injured (the numbers could increase), as a result of explosions targeting Aden airport, coinciding with the arrival of a plane carrying members of the new Yemeni government to the airport runway, according to the Guardian.

Today was supposed to be a day of celebration of the agreement concluded with great difficulty in Saudi Arabia between two competing Yemeni powers to control Aden and southern Yemen, an agreement aimed at helping them confront the Houthis allied with Iran responsible across the north.

The governor of Aden, Ahmed Hamid Lamlas, said, in an audio statement, “The explosions at Aden airport have killed 13 people and injured 65 others until now (13:20 GMT).”

He added that “ambulance operations and evacuating the injured are still underway at the airport, and an investigation has been opened into the accident.”

Earlier Wednesday, the Anadolu Agency correspondent reported, according to a government source who preferred not to be named, that three violent explosions occurred at Aden airport, one of them inside the VIP reception hall.

The new government, which was recently announced, arrived in Aden days after it was sworn in before Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who resides in Saudi Arabia.

The war in Yemen is being fought mainly between the Houthi rebels accused of receiving support from Iran, and the legitimate government forces supported by the UAE-Saudi coalition.
