The President of the United Nations General Assembly visits the Bab al-Hawa crossing… and this is what he pledged

Yesterday, Saturday, the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Volkan Bozkir, expressed his hope that the UN Security Council would raise the number of gates for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the interior of Syria.

During his visit to Hatay Province, southern Turkey, Bozkir inspected the center for transporting humanitarian aid in the town of Reyhanli, which is affiliated with the state to the interior of Syria.

Bozkir was briefed by the Deputy Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syrian Crisis, Mark Katz, on the progress of the delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria.

Speaking to reporters, he indicated that northwestern Syria hosts about 2.7 million displaced Syrians living in difficult humanitarian conditions, pointing out that the United Nations General Assembly had previously discussed the Syrian file three times.

“Unfortunately, we have one gate open out of 4, to deliver UN humanitarian aid to Syria, and I hope that the UN Security Council will increase the number of these gate as soon as possible,” he added.

Bozkir expressed his support for the appeals and endeavors of the international community in this regard, indicating that he would convey his impressions and observations that he received in the field to all members of the United Nations.

He pledged to make all efforts to push the UN Security Council to change its decision, and to allow the number of gates to deliver UN aid to Syria to increase.

After his inspection tour in Reyhanli, Bozkir and his accompanying delegation moved to the “Gilo-Gozo” crossing opposite the Bab al-Hawa border crossing with Syria, where he met with officials of the crossing’s administration on the Turkish side, and representatives of the Turkish Red Crescent.

Bozkir was accompanied on his tour by Turkey’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Feridun Senirloglu, and the representative of the Turkish Foreign Ministry in Hatay Sardar Cengiz province.

Bozkir’s visit to Hatay comes within the framework of a tour that includes Turkey, Qatar and Azerbaijan, between 1 and 12 April.

In July 2020, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution submitted by Germany and Belgium, according to which the UN cross-border aid mechanism to Syria was extended from one crossing (Gilo Gozo opposite the Bab al-Hawa crossing from the Syrian side) on the Turkish border for a year, after Russia’s veto. Twice sending that aid from more than one crossing.
