Washington: Bashar al-Assad stands an obstacle to achieving peace in Syria

The US representative to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield, said in her testimony to a briefing session of the Security Council on the developments in the situation in Syria, that Bashar al-Assad is the main obstacle to achieving peace in Syria.

The American delegate added: “The regime responded to the demonstrations with repression, which set the country on the path of a terrible war, and now for a whole decade, the Syrian people have suffered the unimaginable, a whole decade of violent repression, a whole decade of terrorism, a whole decade of brutal civil war”.

Greenfield explained, “There is one reason .. that prevents us from activating a peaceful solution to the crisis, which is the Assad regime’s refusal to engage in good faith,” adding that the regime “did not take a single step that would lay the foundation for peace,” and called on Russia to pressure the Assad regime “to abandon
Procrastination”.

And she added, “Therefore, we call on Russia to pressure the Assad regime to give up its procrastination. It is time for the regime to confront the root cause of the conflict: the basic demand of all Syrians is to live in dignity, without torture, abuse and arbitrary detention.”

Greenfield asked the international community not to be fooled by the upcoming Syrian presidential elections, because “it will not be free or fair elections, nor will it legitimize the Assad regime, as it does not meet the criteria stipulated in Resolution 2254, including UN supervision or its conduct according to a new constitution”.

“Instead of procrastinating, the Assad regime should release those who have been arbitrarily arrested – particularly women, children, and the elderly,” she added.

The US ambassador called on the special envoy for Syria, Geir Pederson, to provide information on his efforts to locate and release the detainees, and to continue to strengthen efforts in Geneva to work on the release of the detainees.

The US delegate welcomed the UN Security Council’s decision, issued last July, to renew the mechanism for delivering cross-border aid, and said that the United States is looking to “strengthen and expand it, which is indispensable to ensure the delivery of food and medicine, Covid-19 vaccines, and other aid.
Life-saving to Syria ”.

The statements of the American delegate Linda Thomas Greenfield, in her testimony during a session of the UN Security Council on the developments in the situation in Syria, coincided with the tenth anniversary of the revolution that began on March 15, 2011.
