Israel: The Assad regime is the main culprit in drug distribution and must be held accountable

Israel’s Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said that “The main culprit in drug distribution is the Assad regime, and it must be held accountable for its actions. Cohen added that mass sanctions must be imposed on it for drug distribution, calling for establishing a regional coalition to fight the expansion of drug production and smuggling in Syria.”

This statement came during the ministerial meeting of the Global Coalition to address the Synthetic Drug Threats, which includes 97 countries and international organizations hosted by the United States.

Cohen pointed out that “The scourge of drugs affects all countries in the region, which leads to the deterioration of many young people towards addiction and a life of crime, and often to terrorism.”

Cohen stressed that “It is necessary for the countries of the region to gather their forces and resources to combat and fight this phenomenon, calling for imposing severe sanctions on the Assad regime for its role in the regional drug trade, especially the drug Captagon.”

Cohen offered the participants in the meeting “Israeli assistance in the areas of drug detection, strengthening border crossings, and fighting drug distribution.”

For his part, Jordanian Minister Ayman Safadi said that “His country is taking all necessary steps to combat drug smuggling across the Syrian border into his territory, and he is doing everything necessary to protect its national security from this escalating danger.”

Al-Safadi made it clear that establishing the coalition is an important step to address the escalating threat of Synthetic drugs, and confront its dangerous spread, saying: “This coalition will enable us to cooperate to fight drug production, smuggling and distribution.”
