German newspapers celebrate the first Syrian refugee to run in the parliamentary elections
The German newspaper “Tages Spiegel” said that a Syrian refugee ran in the parliamentary elections in Germany for the “Green” party, after he overcame harsh conditions on his asylum trip.
The newspaper added that the refugee Tariq Al-Aws (31 years old) is the first Syrian to run for entry into the German parliament for the “Oberhausen” district of the state of Berlin, noting that he has the support of his party in this province.
Al-Aws studied law in Aleppo and Damascus, and then a peaceful popular revolution erupted against the Assad regime years ago, and he took the participants in peaceful demonstrations and provided humanitarian aid to the Red Crescent in war zones, to become one of the wanted persons for the Assad regime’s intelligence services and then decided to flee in July 2015.
Tariq was able to find a way out on his own, and in cooperation with other refugees, he established an initiative calling for better living conditions for refugees, and at the same time he learned German in just 6 months, and after 8 months he got his first paid job, which is a social worker job, and he also became counseling
Legal Refugees, and in 2018, he co-founded a coalition working to rescue refugees at sea.
The German newspaper says that Tariq’s electoral program includes a solution to the issue of climate and social justice, restoring the role of associations and non-governmental organizations to receive refugees, and he also wants to save refugees from the sea, especially Syrians stranded at the borders of the European Union, as he believes that there is a reluctance by the federal government to rescue and help them.
And a large number of Syrian activists celebrated Tariq’s entry into the German Parliament elections, supporting his idea of being the first Syrian in Germany to gain membership in Parliament.
