European official: The Assad regime and its allies are not making an effort to reach a political solution in Syria

The head of the European Union delegation to Turkey, Ambassador Nicholas Mayer Landrott, said that the Assad regime and its international allies are not making an effort to reach a political and diplomatic solution to the Syrian crisis.

This came in a speech he made during his visit to the municipality of Hatay Province, in which he indicated that the Syrian revolution has completed its tenth year, and pointed out that the most important cause of the crisis in Syria is the injustice and violence that the Assad regime practices against its people.

He explained that both Turkey and the European Union are making great efforts to reach a political settlement in Syria, as they aim to find a solution to the root of the problem there.

He added, “If we succeed in finding a solution like this, then it will be possible for the Syrians, who were forced to leave their country, to return to their homes in a voluntary, safe and dignified manner.”

He added added, “Unfortunately, neither the Assad regime nor its international supporters are making efforts for a political and diplomatic settlement, and therefore we must act based on the current situation for another period of time.”
He pointed out that today marks the fifth anniversary of the signing of the refugee agreement between Turkey and the European Union (March 18, 2016).

He explained that the agreement contributed to saving the lives of many asylum seekers, reducing the number of sea travelers from Turkey to the Greek islands illegally, as well as the European Union’s support for many projects aimed at serving refugees in Turkey.

He indicated that Turkey hosts the largest number of refugees in the world, thanking the Turkish government, officials and Hatay municipality for the great efforts they are making to help refugees.
