The protests continue to condemn the deterioration of the Lebanese pound and the living situation in Lebanon

Dozens of Lebanese marched in the capital, Beirut, on Friday, to protest the continued deterioration of the Lebanese pound against the dollar, and the deterioration of living conditions.

The protesters chose the headquarters of the Ministry of Energy as a gathering point for them, before they set off from there in a march of dozens to the Riad El Solh Square (in the center of the capital), crossing an estimated distance of 4 km.

During the march, titled “To the Street Towards a Transitional Government,” the protesters carried Lebanese flags and slogans denouncing waste and corruption, and demanded a “transitional government” from outside the current ruling political system.

The demonstrators raised slogans condemning the political class and calling for its downfall, in addition to the slogan “Freedom, Dignity, and Justice”, and demanding that weapons be confined to the hands of the Lebanese army.

Groups from the “Will of the People” protest group continued their movements in the south, in opposition to the deterioration of living conditions and the rise in the exchange rate of the dollar.

Under the slogan “For the sake of saving Lebanon and the salvation of the Lebanese,” hundreds marched from Martyrs’ Square in Sidon, roaming a number of city squares and streets, all the way to the Elia Junction.

On Tuesday, the Lebanese currency recorded a sharp decline in parallel market transactions (black), to reach a new record low at 14,500 pounds to the dollar, while the official rate is 1510 pounds.

For more than a year, the country has been experiencing the worst economic crisis since the end of the civil war in 1990, compounded by the repercussions of the Corona pandemic, and a catastrophic explosion in the Beirut port, last August 4.

Due to political differences, Lebanon is unable to form a new government to replace the current caretaker government, headed by Hassan Diab, which resigned 6 days after the port exploded.
