An American warning to countries wishing to normalize their relations with the Assad regime
The US government threatened to apply sanctions to countries that wish to normalize relations with the Assad regime, while the United Nations expressed its disappointment over the lack of any progress in the political track in Syria.
Acting US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Joey Hood issued a warning to countries that are considering normalizing their relations with the Assad regime, and Hood warned against imposing sanctions on these countries “according to the Caesar Act.”
He called on those countries to be careful in this regard, reminding them of the need to take into account what he described as the atrocities committed by the Assad regime against the Syrian people, as he put it.
In the same context, the United States affirmed on Friday that there is no way to achieve peace and stability in Syria except through ending the war and implementing Security Council Resolution 2254.
Resolution 2254, issued on December 18, 2015, calls on the Syrian parties to stop launching attacks on civilian targets, and to hold negotiations and elections under the supervision of the United Nations.
