Spokesperson for Daraa Central Committee : We discussed with Pedersen the necessity of stopping the Assad regime’s military campaign

Yesterday, Tuesday, a meeting was held on the Zoom platform, which included figures from the Syrian interior, especially figures from the notables and notables of Daraa Governorate and the international envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen.

A spokesman for the Daraa Central Committee, “Adnan al-Masalma,” told Fresh Online: “The meeting discussed the latest field and political developments related to the situation in Daraa governorate.”

Al-Masalma added that the meeting discussed the siege imposed on the neighborhoods of Daraa Al-Balad, and the continued harassment of civilians by the forces of the Assad regime, as the siege enters its forty-seventh day on the city’s neighborhoods.

The neighborhoods of Daraa al-Balad have been witnessing a suffocating siege for weeks, and the Assad regime forces deliberately prevent the entry of humanitarian and medical aid into the area, and the neighborhoods lack any medical point, which increases the suffering of the wounded and sick, leaving them to their unknown fate.

Al-Masalma pointed out that the meeting dealt with the failure of negotiations between the Daraa Central Committee and the Security Committee of the Assad regime, and the interference of some unnamed parties in thwarting settlement efforts.

Al-Masalma added that the meeting discussed the file of the 2018 settlement, which was sponsored by Russia as a guarantor between the former opposition factions and the forces of the Assad regime, and the meeting urged the international envoy to exert more pressure on Russia to fulfill its previous pledges regarding the governorate.

Several rounds of negotiations between Daraa’s central committees and the Assad regime’s security committee failed, amid the insistence and intransigence of the latter on its terms of withdrawing light weapons from the residents of Daraa al-Balad neighborhoods, deploying military checkpoints in the area, and displacing those who reject these conditions to northwestern Syria.

The meeting called on the international envoy to exercise his powers to lift the siege imposed on the region in all possible ways, and that the authorities bear responsibility for the deterioration of the humanitarian conditions of more than 50,000 civilians besieged in the neighborhoods of Daraa al-Balad, according to “Al-Masalma.”

Al-Masalma stated that the international envoy promised them to raise their demands to the United Nations and the active countries in the Syrian file to find a way out of the tense situation in Daraa Governorate, and also promised them to conduct a visit to the region to see all the developments.
