An unprecedented service project..the Civil Defense establishes an incinerator for medical waste in northern Syria

The Civil Defense teams (White Helmets) have established a special incinerator to burn medical waste, according to international standards, in the Al-Habat area, with the aim of controlling infections and diseases, and reducing environmental pollution in northern Syria.

In an exclusive interview with Fresh Online, the media official in the Civil Defense, Firas Khalifa, said: “This incinerator is intended to burn the waste of health centers in northwestern Syria, to reduce environmental pollution in light of the deteriorating medical reality after the regime and Russia destroyed a large number of medical facilities.”

He added: “It started with the destruction of these wastes, taking care not to cause any side effects to the burning process, and incineration leads to pollution of the environment and to reduce the risks resulting from its transportation.”

Khalifa explained, “The project includes 500 colored containers that are distributed to a large number of health centers and hospitals affiliated with the Idlib and Aleppo Health Directorates, to facilitate waste sorting and burning operations according to the international system.”

He stressed that the greatest importance of that incinerator is to preserve the environment and prevent pollution resulting from medical waste and waste from hospitals and health centers, during transport operations and not to place them in regular landfills, noting that“somechildren collect plastic materialsfrom waste, which may lead tothe outbreak of some Diseases resulting from medical waste.

He continued, “We were keen to collect, burn and destroy medical waste and reduce the gaseous emissions resulting from it, and the presence of that incinerator will help reduce the pollution resulting from it.”

Khalifa noted that “specialized teams will collect this waste from all centers and hospitals in northwestern Syria, deliver it to the incinerator and destroy it properly.”
In a statement, the Civil Defense pointed out that the incineration process takes place within 3 incineration systems, the first is inside the main combustion chamber, where solid and metal waste is burned, and then the gases generated from the main combustion chamber are re-burned with excess air.

In the third stage, the gases are filtered to purify them from harmful particles, as it adopts the principle of liquid spraying in the gas to remove acidic content such as SO and absorb all water-soluble particles such as solutions by contacting water, pointing out that the method of treating waste using incinerators is the only and most appropriate way to prevent disease outbreaks.

and preserving the environment.
The method of treating waste using incinerators is the only way to control infection and control diseases and pollutants to a large extent, and to get rid of small and open incinerators and the phenomenon of dumping hazardous and infectious medical waste in municipal landfills or disposed of in an illegal manner.

Based on the extensive study points carried out by our teams, there was a need to activate the medical waste incineration system in accordance with international standards. It also provides large areas after the geographical narrowness experienced by more than 4 million people in a small area in northwestern Syria, and reduces the area of land used for waste burial and disposal.
of them without affecting the ecosystem using the latest technologies available.

The Civil Defense Organization continues to provide aid in northern Syria, which is not limited to a specific type, including: providing aid to the wounded, rehabilitating devastated areas, restoring public facilities, rehabilitating displacement camps, and many other service matters that help the families.
