UNHCR in Jordan warns Syrian refugees of scams

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Jordan announced its warning to Syrian refugees of exposure to fraud, theft and false information.

The Commission warned in a statement yesterday, Tuesday, of some people who are working to spread false information, or some pages on social media, regarding the aid provided by the Commission or other organizations via direct phone call or SMS.

She said: “Some people claim that UNHCR or humanitarian organizations affiliated with the United Nations provide such services and information, and that it issued an official statement calling on refugees not to communicate with these misleading pages and some people in order to avoid attempts of theft and fraud, and that these sites do not represent UNHCR and humanitarian organizations.”

The statement indicated that all information related to services and assistance provided by the Commission and United Nations organizations is published through the official channels of the Commission in Jordan.

He added: “At this time when the region is witnessing the spread of a virus, and despite the changes that occurred in the map of services provided by the UNHCR due to the measures taken to limit the spread of the virus, the UNHCR is still communicating with the refugees directly regarding information through the official channels of the Commission in Jordan”.

The statement called on the refugees to verify the information through official sources such as the UNHCR and humanitarian organizations in order to avoid rumors or false information.
The statement stressed that “all UNHCR services are free, including resettlement services,” and the statement warned refugees not to share information about themselves, their families or their files with strangers.

The statement called on refugees to report any bad behavior by UN staff if they feel that they are a victim of fraud, fraud or any form of bad behavior, noting that all complaints will be dealt with confidentially.
