Russia’s delegate to the Security Council attacks the United States and accuses it of “stealing Syrian oil”

The Russian delegate to the Security Council, “Vassily Nebenzia,” accused the United States of “stealing Syrian oil” from the areas of eastern Syria controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces backed by the international coalition.

Nebenzia said, in a session of the UN Security Council yesterday, that “the economic situation is deteriorating significantly in Syria in general and the areas under the control of the Assad regime forces as a result of Western sanctions and the repeated theft of Syrian oil.”

He added, “Syrian oil is being stolen openly and bypassing the Assad regime’s government from the oil-rich areas controlled by US-backed factions in northeastern Syria.”

He pointed out, “The American attempts to justify the American military presence in northeastern Syria seem very embarrassing,” describing this presence as “illegal and legal and a flagrant violation of Resolution 2254 issued by the UN Security Council.”

The Russian ambassador called on the United States to “focus on implementing the international resolution on Syria instead of looking for justifications in places where they exist and cannot exist.”

The Russian official’s speech comes in response to previous statements by the spokesman for the US-led international coalition, General Wayne Maroto, in which he said: “The US military presence in Syria is legitimate under UN Resolution 2254.”
