The Washington Post: al-Hol camp is more dangerous and desperate than ever

The Washington Post quoted US officials as saying that “the al-Hol camp in northern Syria has become a more dangerous and desperate place than ever, as religious extremism is on the rise, endangering non-fanatics.”

The newspaper pointed out that more than 70 people have been killed since January this year in al-Hol camp in eastern Syria in addition to The fragile security situation inside the camp.

This comes in conjunction with efforts to return dozens of families to their communities and attempts to integrate them into their communities, which are also efforts that face many difficult challenges.
Killings are often blamed on hard-line women who take advantage of the fragile security to enforce their strictures and settle scores.

In its report, the newspaper noted that some of the most hard-line women in the camp are trying to re-impose the rules of the Islamic State on the families around them.

The Washington Post report pointed to the difficulties facing the process of returning the Syrians to Raqqa, as the people do not welcome their return and do not sympathize with them, while some of the returnees have disappeared from view after their expulsion, and many of the former detainees return to communities that are still suffering from the consequences of ISIS rule and to neighborhoods which was destroyed by the war.

It is worth noting that about 70,000 people live in the camp, which covers an area of 736 acres, mostly women and children, many of whom were displaced due to the war in Syria and the battles against ISIS.
