Turkey: The European Union has not fulfilled its promises regarding the Syrian refugee file

The President of the Turkish Parliament, Mustafa Sentop, considered the European policy towards the immigration file unacceptable and contradictory to a large extent, in statements to journalists in the Spanish capital.

Shintop said that the EU’s policy regarding immigration, Islamophobia and the eastern Mediterranean is contradictory and not neutral.
He added, “The countries of the European Union have not fulfilled their promises to us regarding Syrian refugees.”

He pointed out that the promises made by the European Union countries regarding this issue do not constitute a tenth of the total pledges they promised to implement, according to what Anadolu Agency reported.

Shintop stressed that his country hosts the largest number of refugees around the world, the majority of whom are Syrians. The confirmation of the Turkish parliament speaker comes in response to statements by a European official in which he downplayed the role his country plays with regard to the migration file and its position calling for calm in Afghanistan.

He pointed out that his country has been hosting about 4 million Syrian refugees for a decade and providing them with the best health and educational services.

“Shintop” called on the international community and the European Union to assume moral and legal responsibility regarding the migration file, and his speech came during an official visit to the Spanish capital, Madrid.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting: “His country has saved human dignity in Syria by hosting millions of refugees and returning hundreds of thousands of them to their areas as a result of military operations against terrorism,” calling on the international community to reach a political solution. For the Syrian issue, he promised to wait another 10 years.

It is noteworthy that Turkey signed an agreement with the European Union in 2016, to limit the flow of refugees, especially Syrians, to Europe, in return for the commitment of the EU countries to provide financial aid to Turkey.
