“IRC”: The amounts pledged during the 7th Brussels Conference to support Syria are insufficient

the IRC’s Country Director in Syria Tanya Evans said that “the amounts pledged during the 7th Brussels Conference on Supporting the future of Syria and the region still too much less than the level of severe needs on the ground.”

This statement came during a dialogue with international non-governmental organizations and Syrian civil society.

Evans explained that the humanitarian situation in Syria is critical. Evans added that we welcome the amounts pledged including the important commitments by the European Union, United States, and Germany.”
Evans pointed out that “€5.6 billion is far from enough to cover the increasing level of needs in Syria and the region.”

Evans also added that “Donors have realized once again that the protracted conflict in Syria requires a collective intensifying of early recovery efforts in order to restore basic services and reduce people’s dependence on aid. It is necessary, within the next twelve months, to see these commitments become a reality, empowering millions of people in Syria from to start rebuilding their lives.”

It is noteworthy that last year, the UN, EU and international donors announced pledged 6.4 billion euros to help the Syrian people and the countries hosting refugees, during the 6th Brussels conference.
