Nasr Al-Hariri: The hostilities of the Assad regime forces in northern Syria constitute a violation of the ceasefire

Yesterday, Tuesday, the head of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces sent a legal memorandum to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, regarding the Assad regime and Russian forces’ attacks on several areas in northern Syria.

In his memo, Hariri said: “The hostilities of the Assad regime and the Russian forces on the Al-Bara, Tarhin and Al-Bab area in northern Syria constitute a flagrant violation of the ceasefire agreement announced on March 5, 2020.

The President of the United Nations General Assembly, Volkan Bozker, the President of the Security Council for the current session, Ambassador Barbara Woodward, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, called for the memorandum to be recorded in its documents and distributed to the delegates of the member states.

Hariri added, “The hostilities against Russia, the Assad regime, Iranian militias and terrorist organizations must be condemned, and serious work to stop them, and the announcement of effective measures that are bound to comply with international decisions, guaranteeing the rescue and protection of Syrians.”

He stressed the need for international decisions to ensure that the necessary accountability measures are taken to prevent impunity for those involved.

The head of the Syrian opposition coalition noted the need to create opportunities for redress for the victims who were killed by the forces of the Assad regime and the Russian forces, pointing out that “Russia must compensate the Syrian people for the material and moral damage they caused in Syria.”

He also called for the de-representation of the Assad regime in international forums, due to its violations of the principles and the Charter of the United Nations.
Hariri concluded his memorandum, calling for support for the efforts of the political track in order to achieve a political transition, and not to allow the regime to fail it again.
