Opposition political forces will boycott the presidential elections for the Assad regime

The General Coordinator of the “National Coordination Commission” in Syria, Hassan Abdul-Azim, said today, Wednesday, “The political forces that will declare a front in the name of the opposition inside the country (internal opposition), will boycott the upcoming presidential elections.”

Abdel-Azim added that the presidential elections in Syria are a pre-emptive act that blocks the road to a political solution in accordance with the Geneva Declaration and international resolutions, including UN Resolution 2254.

He explained, “If elections are held in this way, then why if the Constitutional Committee was formed whose tasks include drawing up a constitution for the country, and a governing body?”
He stressed that the presidential elections mean that the formation of the committee was formal and that the situation will continue as it is.

The front, which is scheduled to be officially announced days after Damascus.
The Assad regime seeks to hold presidential elections in 2021, according to the constitution it approved in 2012, and Assad will be the strongest candidate in it to win, while the Syrian opposition does not recognize the legitimacy of holding elections on time for several considerations, most notably the failure to recognize the current constitution (2012), and the start of actions
The Syrian Constitutional Committee, and the consequences that will follow from it, must precede the process of electing a Syrian president.
