Moscow hopeful Syria’s constitution committee will resume work soon

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed that his country hopes to resume the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee at the soonest possible time with participation of the Assad regime and opposition delegations.

“We have informed our counterparts about our work through bilateral channels with Damascus, in the Astana format with participation of Turkey and Iran, as well as at the Geneva venue” Lavrov said at a news conference on Saturday after talks with his Qatari counterpart Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani.

Lavrov stressed that he referred through his talks to “the need to deliver humanitarian aid to Syrians to help them rebuild war-damaged civilian infrastructure, without politicizing the issue.”

It is worth noting that on January 29, the fifth round of meetings of the Constitutional Committee concluded in Geneva, without formulating the basic principles of the goal for which it was established, which is to define a mechanism for drafting a new constitution for Syria in accordance with United Nations Resolution 2254 to form a transitional governing body and organize new elections.
