The Times: Asma Al-Assad faces possible terrorism charges in London

Asma al-Assad, the wife of the regime’s head, Bashar al-Assad, faces possible trials and the loss of her British nationality after the London Metropolitan Police opened a preliminary investigation into accusations that she “incited and encouraged terrorist acts during the ten years in the country,” according to The Times newspaper.

Al-Assad’s wife, Asma, was able to extend her control over the various sectors of the economy in the country, after she removed Rami Makhlouf, Assad’s cousin, and direct control over his most important companies, such as the “Sham Holding” company, which was also guarded by the judicial system.

The United States imposed new sanctions on Syria targeting its central bank, and blacklisted a number of individuals and entities, including the wife of the regime’s head, Asma al-Assad, as part of continuous efforts to cut off funding for his government.

These measures come in the wake of a series of sanctions imposed by Washington on Syria this year, and represent a new round in the United States’ attempts to push the Assad regime to return to the United Nations-led negotiations to end the war that began in the country about ten years ago.

Sanctions were imposed on Asma al-Assad, after accusing her of obstructing efforts aimed at a political solution to the war, along with a number of her family members. Washington imposed sanctions on her in June.
